Topical Steroid Addiction & Withdrawal Syndrome Art

This is the complete collection of original artworks created in response to experiencing unintentional topical steroid addiction and withdrawal syndrome: a preventable, horrific medical condition not yet recognized in the United States. It is, however, recognized in the U.K. and Australia. Beginning intentionally with a minimal palette and making use of negative space, I meditate or pray on a word or phrase that comes to mind while I paint. This is both related to the emotions and grief associated with experiencing this condition, and becomes the title for the piece. The texture you see is commemorative of the broken skin I experienced.

Important Note: When purchasing, please note that pick up will be at CCA Gallery in downtown Carmel, Indiana. My skin would chronically cycle from severe inflammation and swelling, to severe "human snow globe" level shedding every 24 hours. In these tub sessions, it was very difficult to maintain a reality of what was and yet all the things to hope for -reasons to brave the fear and leave the safety the water provided. It took two years for me to be at ease with showering again, even after a long soak, as the shower experience felt like thousands of needles piercing the raw, broken skin. For years during topical steroid withdrawal, my circadian rhythm was opposite. Grocery shopping at 10pm was my social activity. Watching documentaries became a hobby. When I tried to sleep, if my brain was not chasing the last glimmer of stimuli, it was fighting overwhelming bone-deep sensation of itching. My body would battle what we call "zingers" in the TSW community. Essentially, it feels like both your skin internally is on fire or boiling, and ants are crawling across the top simultaneously. Between the full-body shedding, the "zingers", and the other dark physical realities that arose from this condition, taking things like melatonin, Benadryl, lavender essential oil, and prayer helped me find rest. Early in the withdrawal, the skin was so raw that I was couch-ridden for six to nine months, unable to turn my head or lift a coffee pot. Reality of the condition takes precedence over every minute detail that it's impossible to escape. Wearing only cotton, saying no to a walk because the wind feels like ants across your skin, losing your eye brows, finding it impossible to hold a pen and write a note due to the risk of the cracked skin getting blood on the paper...your heart learns to wait, then cry, and wonders if ever what was could ever be, again.
