Background story:

It's interesting how God uses ashes to bring life. Earlier this year, a local resident approached me about a private commission. The prompt was that he wanted an black piece that when he looked at it, he felt nothing. As an artist, it was quite the undertaking. How do you create something and feel nothing?
As this 48"x72" encaustic evolved over the canvas, I kept going back to the following ideas:
- numb
- doubt
- anxiety
- lament
- not being able to see or questioning what the future looks like

I ended up being led to the curiosity of what the disciples might have felt when Jesus died. Jesus had said in parables and plainly that he would be delivered to be crucified, but imagine watching your best friend be harassed, abused, and violently tortured before being publicly executed in the most humiliating way possible for that time period. The Romans thought crucifixion was so embarrassing that they prohibited their own citizens from receiving such a sentence.

We, as a family, have been mourning the loss of Charlie Kirk this week. It has been a struggle to know what to say, but watching more than ever Charlie's content, it's evident that he lived so much like Christ. I'm 85% of the way through listening to the Bible this year, and am amazed how much Charlie reminds me of the way Jesus lived. He made himself available, asked questions and challenged worldviews, all so the truth of the Gospel could be known and understood. He was patient, respectful, and always wished those who disagreed with him well. For that, he was martyred.

I have not released yet the commission available for prints, but to honor Charlie's legacy as the community grieves, I will be releasing canvas prints and donating the profits from "An Easter Saturday Lament" to Turning Point USA. Use code CHARLIE at check out to contribute your purchase as a donation.

The intent is not to profit off of something horrific, but allow you to both support Charlie's legacy, and feel seen in your lament. The disciples may have felt lost as they grieved the loss of Christ, but soon, their mourning would turn to joy at his resurrection and the gift of the Holy Spirit. I hope this print inspires conversations that invites opportunities to share the Gospel, and the beautiful work that Jesus can do in your life. We are living testimonies of that good news, and I pray that if you haven't experienced that joy, one day soon he will surprise you in the best way possible.
Grace & Peace
