Scratching the Brimstone Canvas

In October of 2016, my body unintentionally started the withdrawal process from an unrealized addiction to the topical corticosteroid creams used to manage my eczema flares. The withdrawal process lasted for years, with the most debilitating being at the beginning where I was couch-ridden for six to nine months. I could barely turn my head or lift a coffee pot due to the raw, brokenness of my skin. Itching sensations felt they were right next to the bone, often called "zingers", where it simultaneously felt like ants crawling on my skin and my skin literally feeling like it was on fire. The rage of inflammation would soon give way to immense "human snow globe" level shedding, creating a cyclical non-stop pattern for years. This condition was so severe, that due to the compromised nature of my skin I could not paint for six years. The abstract collection evaluates the emotions experienced in topical steroid addiction and withdrawal, and the question of, "When we experience grief or trauma, what do we look to? Where is our hope, and our joy?" Understandably, this condition at times brought dark, uninvited thoughts. It was all I could do to say, "Jesus, please help me." and immediately I felt the Holy Spirit rush upon me with peace. My physical pain had not changed, but the darkness could not overcome the light. This piece acknowledges the hell of TSW, the literal abrasions and "scratch marks", and the reality that through the crimson blood, Christ is our protector. Our faith is a shield against the darkness, and demonic forces.
